Am I Faithless and Perverse?

Have you ever wondered why Jesus said, when told about a boy with a demon, "O faithless and perverse generation, how long shall I be with you and bear with you?"  Luke 9:41  I used to think that He was rebuking His disciples for not being able to cast the unclean spirit out.  But He was addressing a whole generation of the nation of Israel, not just a few guys.  What do you think was bothering Him?  I got an insight on that today from our Old Testament passage in the OYB.

When I was pondering what to write today, the Holy Spirit said "Start with Jesus and go back."  So I did.  This is a good principle - I highly recommend it!

I'm quite certain that Jesus was disturbed because this was God's chosen people and they had become completely victimized by Satan.  If they had obeyed God's directions back when they were given the Promised Land, the ones we read today and have been reading, they would not have been in this predicament.  They were as bad off as the rest of the world, at least in the demonic oppression arena, when they should have been free from the evil one's torment.  But they did exactly what God had told them not to do: imitate the nations around them, especially when it came to spiritual practices.

“When you come into the land which the LORD your God is giving you, you shall not learn to follow the abominations of those nations. There shall not be found among you anyone who makes his son or his daughter pass through the fire, or one who practices witchcraft, or a soothsayer, or one who interprets omens, or a sorcerer, or one who conjures spells, or a medium, or a spiritist, or one who calls up the dead. For all who do these things are an abomination to the LORD, and because of these abominations the LORD your God drives them out from before you. You shall be blameless before the LORD your God. For these nations which you will dispossess listened to soothsayers and diviners; but as for you, the LORD your God has not appointed such for you."  Deuteronomy 18: 9-14

When I was in college (long, long ago "in a faraway land"), I got caught up in the occult.  I promise you, when you do this stuff, or even dabble in it, you open up doors to demonic influence.  My salvation included a lot of necessary deliverance from evil spirits.  Some people go way too far in condemning every little thing, and they become as tormenting as the demons they're afraid of!  I'm not talking about witch-hunting or "finding a demon under every rock".  I'm serious, though, about not grieving the Spirit and not giving place to the abominations that God clearly hates.

Unfortunately, our culture is full of evil practices, idol worship, and occult fascination and involvement.  "Pagan" is big these days.  I run into it a lot in the artistic circles I associate in (this is my mission field).  The Lord reminds me often not to let it influence me.  We are so surrounded by it that I think we (the Church in general) are becoming callous to it.  Be open to the correction of the Holy Spirit, and also of those who watch over you spiritually, such as your pastor, when they warn you of these things.  I'm not one of these, I am just a messenger (but if you hear His voice through me, listen).  As such, I'll name a couple of things as examples of what I feel are infiltrating influences that I know for a fact that some Christians are allowing in: vampire stuff and Harry Potter.  Sorry to meddle, but these images and ideas are from the devil; they should not be fun to a believer because they grieve the Holy Spirit.  This stuff is contamination; I think at best it is lowering your spiritual immune system, but probably much worse.  Please consider dealing with it!

When our spirit is no longer grieved by what grieves the Holy Spirit (or we continue to ignore the grief) we are in great spiritual danger.  This troubles me because we are to be overcomers, and this means "conquerors".  Should we be conquered by the evil that Jesus died and rose again to conquer?  He delivered us from evil; we even pray "deliver us from evil".  Why do we play with it then?  We call it "entertainment"!  Wouldn't Jesus call it "faithless and perverse?"  This hurts, I know, but it needs to be said.  Believe me, I've heard it from Him more than once myself.

It is prophetic types, like me, who are most attracted (when not yielding to the Holy Spirit) to darkness, evil practices and occult spiritual power.  Even though they are called to be especially tuned-in to God's communications and purposes and to help train others this way, it is this type of person that is most likely to be influenced by satanic and occult things.  [This is why God gave instructions as to how to know a prophetic word was from Him or not. Deut. 18: 21-22, and many others]  This may seem strange and unbelievable to many, but if you are this type of person, or you are near someone who is, you will easily be able to observe what I am talking about.  Sadly, I have known people who are amazingly gifted prophetically who have gotten far too interested in what the devil is doing, so much so that they ended up following him instead of Christ Jesus.  Don't you be one of these!  And if you are a parent, and you have a child who is generally drawn to these things, pay attention, because you probably have a prophetically motivated/gifted child, and you will need to understand these things and learn how to raise them up in the Lord according to their gifts.

I praise God because Jesus conquered!  He completely trampled down the devil.  Jesus is Lord!! It is up to each of us individually to allow Jesus to be Lord in our own life.  When He is, He will increase His kingdom in us, and through us where He gives us authority.  These are dark and perilous times, and deceptions are rampant.  Since we are the Children of  Light, let us all live in the Light and shine His Light into the world.

November 3, 2010 The Mark of Groaning

Jesus, God's faithful High Priest, has been revealing to us the idols that grieve Him-- all leading up to the exposure of the "image that provokes to jealousy."  Although there may very well be an historical outworking of this in the world, with the beast, false prophet and the "abomination of desolation," I am, right now, simply responding to the Spirit who is revealing spiritual conditions of the human heart.  In my understanding, this image that provokes God to jealousy is the self, sitting on the throne of the heart.  By now, we should have a clear sense of God's opinion of this.  If that is what we see in ourselves, then we must allow Christ to deal with it once and for all.  True salvation includes deliverance from the rule and worship of self.

God has work for His saints to do.  We're not just waiting around for the end to come~ we are called to be kings and priests with Him as His Kingdom grows upon the earth.  He intercedes 24/7 in the heavenlies and we are to minister with Him  (we are in the heavenlies when we walk in the Spirit).  This requires purification of heart so that we may be at one with Him and His purposes.  Once our hearts are cleansed and in unity with the Spirit, we begin to see what He is doing on the earth and to be united with His purposes.

We must understand that God allows things to come to fruition~  He lets them develop until they are fully grown.  It is then that things are seen for what they are, and God's judgments are shown to be righteous.  Ezekiel writes: "The rod has blossomed, pride has budded. Violence has risen up into a rod of wickedness." Ezekiel 7: 10b-11a NKJV  This is one reason we don't see God act on things when we think He ought to!  Yes, it is troublesome to have to put up with evil all around us, but the end is coming for all wickedness.

I'll never forget the first time I realized that I was supposed to be grieved over the evil in the world (before that, I sort of ignored it).  I had read a Scripture verse about Lot being troubled over the evil of his city (2 Peter 2:7 I suggest reading the different translations), and I realized that I wasn't all that bothered myself.  I began to pray for God's heart on it: wow, what a change that brought on!  Very uncomfortable, but how can we pray if we don't see things the way God does?

One of the reasons we don't want to see and feel God's way is that it makes us feel separated from humanity, and from the world we live in.  Most of us don't want to feel that way.  We have such an intense need to belong that we dull ourselves to the evil, or hide ourselves away in little pockets of Christian life.  No, of course we don't need to wallow in wickedness~  that's not what I'm getting it.  But you can hardly get away from it if you exist in the world.  It is how we respond to what we see that I'm talking about.  The sick feeling I get in my soul and spirit when I see the way the world is does not drive me to attack the world, rather it causes me to go before the throne of God for direction and grace.  I then receive His comfort, because He feels the same separation from the world, and so many of the people in it.  Christ came to bridge that separation, yet how many refuse to cross into the blessedness of God's light? And yet, His heart rejoices greatly in those who love Him, and His glorious plans for the future are real and sure.

Sharing God's hatred of evil and His love of the truth sets us apart from the world, and brings us into His realm of protection.  "And He called to the man clothed with linen, who had the writer’s inkhorn at his side;  and the LORD said to him, “Go through the midst of the city, through the midst of Jerusalem, and put a mark on the foreheads of the men who sigh and cry over all the abominations that are done within it.” Ezekiel 9: 3-4 NKJV  (Of course, we know this includes women too).  Part of the Lord's Prayer is "deliver us from evil".  Are we serious about praying this, or are we too concerned about how it will affect our lifestyle?

God's "secret place" is not always a very comfortable one, but it is a spiritually safe one.

These visions of Ezekiel today are some of the most chilling in the Bible to me.  This picture strikes at the heart of what is going on in the world and in our nation, not just historically in the past or future temple in Jerusalem:
"Then he said to me, 'Mortal, have you seen what the elders of the house of Israel are doing in the dark, each in his room of images?  For they say 'The Lord does not see us, the Lord has forsaken the land.'" Ezekiel 8:12 NRSV

Satan has dark strategies that are working out in the governments of man.  But there is nothing hidden that will not be revealed.  We might as well face it:  God sees everything.  He's dealing with what's inside His people's hearts until we can join in praying wholeheartedly "Thy Kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. . .deliver us from evil."  We ask the Spirit of Truth and Revelation to expose the darkness, bring those who will repent into the Kingdom of Christ, and to glorify His name in the lives of the people of God.

Don't be afraid to see what the Lord shows you about what is happening in the world.  Because Christ is victorious, and so are you!

Come quickly, Lord Jesus!

September 14, 2010 Hastening Righteousness

As I read the O.T. prophets I sometimes wonder what kind of relevancy there is in them (for myself, for us right now) .  I love to find the passages that speak directly of Christ, so of course I'm always looking for that.  But what of the rest of it?  It's easy to want to pass over it.  Today though, since the coming elections are on my mind (I've been seeking the Lord for ways to pray for the nation), these prophetic words take on a poignant application.

One thing we can see in the prophetic writings, especially the ones of judgment on particular nations, is what is it that pleases God in a nation, and what brings His anger and judgment?  I see a clear "compare and contrast" of the rulership of Christ vs. the rulership of earthly kingdoms.  If we're open to it, I think we will be able to see our nation, with its government and leadership, as God sees it.  We will have a clearer vision of what we should look for in our leaders, and we will be able to see what the future outcomes will be of the decisions made in our government.  As the constituents of a democracy, the responsibility for these falls on us.

Rather than attempt to tell you (or myself) what to think or pray, I'm simply going to point out the sides of the "balance" that I see.  I don't want the proclamation on us in the heavenlies to be you've been weighed in the balance and found wanting.  On God's right hand is Christ, the King, and His righteous character.  On the left is that which, eventually, will be separated out and destroyed.

In mercy the throne will be established;
And One will sit on it in truth, in the tabernacle of David,
Judging and seeking justice and hastening righteousness.
Isaiah 16:5

We know that Jesus Christ is returning to reign on Earth, and that His reign will be just, righteous and true.  But anyone who wants to can willingly give up the throne and allow Him to rule right now (in the future, it will be mandatory).   This is simply recognizing the reality that Jesus is actually Lord.  "All authority in heaven and earth is given to me."  The truth is, there is only one throne.  Anyone in it other than Him is a usurper and will be overthrown.  It is easy enough to tell who is on the throne-- in my own life and in the nations.

PRIDE
We have heard of the pride of Moab—
He is very proud—
Of his haughtiness and his pride and his wrath;
But his lies shall not be so.
Therefore Moab shall wail for Moab;
Everyone shall wail.
Isaiah 16: 6-7a

Pride is what brought Satan down, and what will bring every nation and every individual to a fall.

The first and best thing we can each do for our nation is to go before the Lord and allow Him to reveal Himself to us.  In His presence, our own pride and haughtiness are revealed.  The places where we do not allow Him to rule are revealed.  If we allow Him to take the logs out of our eyes, we may, with His grace, have a clear enough vision to see the faults of our nation and take them before the Lord in humble intercession.

Questions to ponder:
We often hear the statement God Bless America!  Do you say it?
Have you ever taken for granted the fact of God's blessing the nation?
What do we need to do as a nation to reap God's blessings?
On what is the Lord dealing with you today to help you be a better citizen:
1) of the Kingdom of God 2) of the country you live in?

July 16, 2010 The Prince of Peace Builds His House

There is a generation that does great warfare in the spirit and subdues their enemies all around.  They gather the foundation stones and all the materials needed to build the temple-- a temple for God's name.  These great stones are foundational truths from the Word of God.  These they quarry and hew and dress with great labors.  They gather the knowledge (trees) and the tested, pure testimony of God (gold tried in the fire).  They dig deep for rubies and diamonds and sapphires and emeralds of revelation and bequeath these treasures to their children.  All these things they prepare for the next generation, imparting to them a great love and value of the truth, until the children become the stones and the trees and the gold.  The children become the jewels for the King's crown.  The parents prepare all:  they impart the vision: they lay down their lives so the children can be built into the house for God's name.

The Prince of Peace spares no expense in building His habitation, which must be glorious.  He is a man of rest, for He has subdued His enemies all around.  His name is Peaceful.  His children rest in Him and are assured of peace, for they are secure in Him.  There is no more intimidation or striving in war, for just a word and the enemies all around cower and flee.  The house is built quietly and with a noble order so reverent that no voice is heard except that of the Prince.  He places His stones with great care, for they are living, breathing beings who are equally at home in the heavenly realm as in the earthly realm.  Nothing can shake them because they are being built together in peace.

The house for the name of God is exceedingly magnificent, famous and glorious throughout all countries.  There the name of God is revealed in all its facets, and the worship of Him creates such splendor that the nations are drawn to its boundless wisdom, beauty, holiness and power.

June 18, 2010 Persecution and Ministering Angels

There are two parallels with the Old and New Testament readings today that stood out to me: 1) the activity of a major demonic spirit, and 2) the activity of ministering angels from God.  We call this particular evil spirit "Jezebel", after the queen who allowed it to control her.  I see the same evil spirit working in Herod as well, as the evil spirit can work through men as well as women.  It seems here that it tries especially to control the person in charge.  Keep your eyes open for the workings of this devious spirit, as it is very active at this time in history.

One of the marked traits of the Jezebelian spirit is persecuting and killing the prophets of God (and anything to do with prophetic ministry).  It's always good to see the end of a road so as to decide whether we want to be on it or not.  Personally, I wouldn't want to be following the same path as a Jezebel spirit, even in a small way.  Since we're in the last days, and we've been told that God would pour out His Spirit on all flesh and that there would be a lot of prophesying going on (Joel 2: 28-32), I think we should be careful not to be party to an evil spirit who would wish to stop this.  It's also good to beware of counterfeits: but if you know the Spirit of Truth, it's pretty easy to spot something that's not Him.

Even though I'm not excited about going through more persecution (although Jesus did say it was coming), I am very much looking forward to seeing more angelic activity (God's ministering angels).  As we see in today's passages, when the persecution level goes up, so does the level of angelic ministry.  I've personally experienced some angelic ministrations, although I have not "seen" the angels (with my natural eyes).  I would certainly like to be aware of more.

If you're not used to (or don't like to be) thinking about supernatural things, you might want to ask the Lord to change your viewpoint.  You might find this kind of help to be very much needful in the future.  Probably none of us would be alive today if it weren't for the help and protection of God's angels.  I'm grateful indeed for a God Who loves us so much that He created a multitude of powerful and holy beings who are willing to serve Him and us!  And in God's mercy, He didn't allow Satan, and the other rebellious angels, to run around on Earth without making sure that God's loyal and powerful angels were right there to help us always have the victory.

P.S. I'm reminded of Rick Joyner's little book, When God Walked The Earth-- and I'm wondering how an angel might feel if they were not allowed to save someone, such as James, who was called to be martyred and was killed for the sake of the Gospel.  They would then minister a different kind of grace.

June 11, 2010 When We Cover Our Ears

From the glory and rejoicing of the dedication of Solomon's temple to the hard-hearted stoning of Stephen:  what a jolting and disturbing contrast!

I don't have a lot to say about this.  Except: this could be us!  At any time, it could be me.  This is a stark picture of what happens to us when we habitually stop our ears from the Word of God, reject true prophetic expressions from the Lord, or refuse to receive a godly rebuke given in love.  Taking the truth can be painful, but when we refuse it, we can kill.  (Don't just limit killing to picking up a stone-- you know we can kill with words, with looks, with rejection.)

I pray that the Spirit of Wisdom and Discernment will show us the heart of the matter.  One thing I see is that, if we get stuck where we're at and make a religion out of what's supposed to be a relationship, we are at risk of completely misunderstanding, and even outright rejecting,  the next thing that God might do.  His purposes have been flowing along, right from the beginning, and He's never turned back from where He's been going.  The people of Stephen's day were right in the middle of God's river, the same river they were in during Solomon's reign, and yet they misinterpreted what was happening.  He even told them in advance what He was going to do.

KEY:
God always goes higher and deeper!  Instead of the commandments in the ark and the glory cloud in the holy place of the temple, the living Word was in Stephen and the glory of God had filled him, a temple "not made with hands." [Not just Stephen, but any Christian who allows Him to do so.]

I've seen and heard of God doing some pretty strange things.  Sometimes I've misjudged these things, and later had to repent.  I think God's going to be doing some very radical things in these days.  I've heard some things, even just today, that fit that description, and I'm not going to disregard them.  We need discernment, and we definitely need to stay close to Jesus and listen to His Spirit, Who is glad to interpret to us what He is saying and doing in these last days.  Let's not cover our ears!

"But they cried out with a loud voice, and covered their ears and rushed at him with one impulse." Acts 7:57 NASB

Bonus:  Discern the difference between following the crowd and the unity of the Spirit.

April 9, 2010

Today I received a personal word from the Lord from the daily reading, an encouragement and a greater understanding of what my purpose is for this particular blog.  Here's the verse I read:

And again He said, "To what should I compare the kingdom of God?  It is like yeast that a woman took and mixed in with three measures of flour until all of it was leavened."  Luke 13:20-21

He said that I am to be like that woman, mixing the fresh word of God about the Kingdom into the One Year Bible daily devotional.  It is, of course, up to Him to see that His Word ministers to people, but up to me to do my part of the work.  I am reminded of the "leaven of the Pharisees" that Jesus warned His disciples not to have.  Hypocrisy and unbelief come to mind when I think of that leaven, which would turn the good flour into poison bread.  But the leaven of the Kingdom of God is much more effective, because it is motivated and nourished by God's love, and it will not puff anyone up, including myself, but will truly edify.

March 20, 2010

Have you ever been "in the wilderness" experiencing God's spiritual feast while you are distanced from earthly things?  I believe it's a necessary place to be in preparation for ministry.  Jesus was there, and while He was, Satan came to tempt and test Him.  I see three areas He was tempted in: 1) His physical existence, 2) His purpose, and 3) His identity.  In any one of these areas, He could have reacted according to the flesh, but He walked in the Spirit and overcame with God's Word.  We can all do the same, with His help.

In the area of physical existence, we are constantly challenged to rise above the worldly way of living and follow God's instructions.  He is to be our source in every way.  The wilderness shows us where we are relying on things other than God to sustain us and meet our needs.  As a personal example, when I fasted from shopping I became aware of how I was using it to cope with anxiety.

In the area of purpose, did you notice the theme of "authority" being expanded?  That again could be a whole blog in itself!  Let's just think about Jesus' purpose.  He knew what He was supposed to do, but it was obviously not to be done the way Satan suggested.  It looks obvious here to us as we read it, but our enemy tries the same approach on all of us-- it just seems more subtle when we're in the middle of it.

We have to be on our guard, particularly when we feel we are clear on what our calling is and we are headed for it.  Satan will try to avert us from the path of truth and get us to accomplish, in our own strength, whatever God has told us to do.  If we didn't pass the "physical existence" test, we will be easy prey in this area.  Look what happened to Balaam.  It seemed that he had repented from his oracle-for-pay lifestyle, but today we read that he was responsible for a despicable plan to bring Israel down.  He was slain in the vengence against Midian.  What a reminder to maintain the fear of the Lord and not be driven by greed!  I'm sure greed is the reason many called prophetic people err, and even become false.

If the enemy can't stop you with the first two assaults, he will aim at the heart of your being. "Who are you, really?"  "Why would God ever do that for you?" I have many times, during this kind of test, felt like a delusional person while the enemy taunts me with "you are nobody" and "you're just nacissistic."  When my pastor shared that Jesus' last reply was "It is said," Luke 4:12, it revolutionized my understanding of the wilderness experience.    It's when the Lord has applied Scripture to you, or given you a vision, etc., and you've received it in your heart ("You are my child." "This is what we're going to do."), that you can use Biblical truth to overcome the lies of the enemy.  Just quoting Scripture isn't going to do it if you don't believe the Word in your heart.  And it doesn't have to be written word-for-word in the Bible if it's truth from God (you should test everything you hear or see against Scripture to make sure).

Again, you can use whatever God had said to you, or shown you in any way, as part of your warfare.  Here's an example.  During my second pregnancy, the Lord said to me "Your baby is going to come early, but it's going to be alright."  Not long after, I had a dream (or vision) of my son grown up.  There were many times, during the course of labor and delivery, two months early, and afterwards while my son was very ill or had problems, I held on to the words and vision from the Lord.  Scripture all backed me up in my faith, of course, but it was the strength of direct revelation from the Lord that kept me going in the middle of distress.  Many times I had to refuse to follow advice from "experts."  Now, my son is grown up and married, and he is a wonderful, talented and successful man of God.  And I know that God's not done fulfilling His word.  Praise the Lord!

That was a lot of words to say: embrace the wilderness-- because when you come forth, having been tried by fire, you will see the word of the Lord fulfilled.

March 15, 2010

The Scripture readings for the last couple of days have spoken loudly to me about how people's words can steer the course of events.   Yesterday, we read "By the blessing of the upright a city is exalted, but it is overthrown by the mouth of the wicked." Proverbs 11:11  Today, Proverbs says that sometimes we need to hold our tongue.

I could write a whole lot about this, but instead, I'd like to encourage you to check it out for yourself.  How many examples can you find of people speaking words that influenced the future?  Were they positive or negative?

I'll give you an example:  look at Balaam and Zechariah.   These two men were both supposed to speak words from God that would effect the nation of Israel.  God had to intervene in each of these men's lives to keep them from opposing His plan with their words.   Balaam was confronted by an angel and so was Zechariah.  It was both these men's potential words that were an issue.  When they accepted God's will and were willing to speak in agreement with it, they were each released to prophecy and bless.

Too many times, I find myself opposing the Lord by speaking negatively.  I have discovered that it is not a peaceful place to be!  It's this very lack of peace that opposes me and brings me around to seek for God's perspective on my life and circumstances, or His attitude towards people, and causes me to get my speaking in line with His.

What kinds of things have you found opposing you lately?  Do you think it might have anything to do with what you've been saying?

March 9, 2010

Have you ever heard the term "spiritual pride"?  I understand that people use the term to mean "proud over their spirituality" or something like that, but it seems to me that pride is anything but spiritual!  Satan fell by being proud, didn't he?

Remember the reading from February 26?:  "But when He [Jesus] had turned around and looked at His disciples, He rebuked Peter, saying, "Get behind Me, Satan! For you are not mindful of the things of God, but the things of men." Mark 8:33    No matter how "spiritual" we think we are, if we're in pride, we're not walking in the Spirit.  If we're arguing with Jesus, we're taking sides with the devil!  Satan is a spirit, but he became carnal by being proud.

All human beings have spirits, whether they walk with Christ or not, and all spirits are not of God!   Does this change your point of view about non-Christians?  About spirituality?

If you can get a handle on the truth that pride originates in your spirit, it will revolutionize your Christian walk!  [Bonus:  there's a reason humility isn't listed in the Fruits of the Spirit, Galatians 5:22-23.  Humility is an attitude or position of the spirit, and it is your free-will choice;  it takes humility to "walk in the Spirit" in order to bear fruit.]

Moses and Jesus both demonstrated, through their words and actions, what it is to be humble.  They were submitted to God.  "Now the man Moses was very humble, more so than anyone else on the face of the earth." Numbers 12:3  He had an intimate relationship with God.  Jesus is the Son of God, and the most spiritual of all wouldn't you say, and He prayed, "Abba, Father, for you all things are possible; remove this cup from me; yet, not what I want, but what you want." Mark 14:36

The readings today show both Old Testament and  New Testament examples of how pride is a spiritual issue, what the outcome is, and how to avoid it.  In Numbers 11, God had just transferred some of the anointing Moses had onto seventy of the elders, and they prophesied.  Although Joshua expressed some concern over this, Moses replied, "Are you jealous for my sake?  Would that all the Lord's people were prophets, and that the Lord would put his spirit on them!" 11:28-29  I'm thinking some pride was exposed by this turn of events, for it wasn't long before Aaron and Miriam rose up in criticism of Moses saying, "Has the Lord spoken only through Moses?  Has he not spoken through us also?" 12:1-2  Miriam must have instigated it, as she was the one who was disciplined.  Do you think perhaps the Lord was giving a strong warning to those who had received the Spirit, not to walk in pride over it?  How does this pertain to us?

Jesus' disciples seemed to have had the same problem.  They'd been singled out to walk with Jesus day by day, and He had told them many things in private.  I think they began to see themselves as very spiritual, so much so that they wouldn't receive a serious warning from Jesus.  "Even though I must die with you, I will not deny you," said Peter.  And all of them said the same, even though Jesus had just told them they would all run off.  He gave Peter, James and John the chance to "keep awake and pray,"  but it seems that they were overwhelmed and went to sleep instead.

Pride does not watch and pray, but humility does.  Pride falls into temptation, humility falls on its face before God.

"When pride comes, then comes disgrace; but wisdom is with the humble." Proverbs 11: 2

We could think God contradicted Himself if we read (out of context) "Truly, no ransom avails for one's life, there is no price one can give to God for it.  For the ransom of life is costly, and can never suffice that one should live on forever and never see the grave." Psalm 49: 1-20.  But if we read on, the same psalm states: "But God will ransom my soul from the power of Sheol, for he will receive me." vs 15.  What a great prophesy of Christ's ransom for us!  It truly shows that there was no way of redemption except Him, but that God, indeed, had always promised a Way.

Obviously, the first verse speaks of a person trying to redeem himself or another, and that there is no amount of riches capable of redeeming us.  Christ's life and sacrifice was SO valuable that it sufficed to redeem any and all who would receive Him-- forever!  As an aside, these verses really shows how valuable we are to God, and should increase our own concept of worth, and change how we value ourselves and others.

Unfortunately, (pun intended), there are many people who still trust in riches to save them, and many nations who do as well.  Is ours one of them, do you think?  Do you think that false messiahs who come along-- with schemes to deceive-- might try to wield worldly wealth and power as a means of solving the world's problems?  Have you ever seen this type of deception in the Church itself?  Does it seem logical to you that any amount of wealth could help with the types of trouble that Jesus prophesied for the end times, and that we see ourselves in the midst of now?  Mark 12: 7-8

Jesus was also clear that much of the end-time trouble would be between people, with rampant betrayal and hatred, even among relatives: "because of my name."  He directed us to trust the Holy Spirit to give us the words to say, and told us to "endure until the end."  vs 9-13

I see a flip-side to the principle that no amount of wealth can redeem us.  It seems to me that no amount of wealth (which equates to worldly power) can "buy God off" either!  Who could pay God enough to "un-redeem" us?  Who could be wealthy enough to take us to court and condemn us when we have a Righteous Advocate on our side?  Christ!  If God is for us, who can be against us?  An entire nation?  The whole world system?  None of these powers could redeem us, and none of them can destroy us either.  We are truly safe IN the Lord!  It might be unpleasant or painful for a while, but all we need is endurance to see the salvation of God, and His promise of eternal life.

"Why should I fear in times of trouble, when the iniquity of my persecutors surrounds me, those who trust in their wealth and boast of the abundance of their riches?"  Psalm 49: 5-6

Jesus is not swayed, influenced or impressed by riches and worldly power.  This is clear in the beginning of the Mark passage.  He does not judge by outward appearance, but sees the heart.  He saw through the pomp of the religious leaders of the day, and He commended the poor widow for offering all she had because of her love for God.  He hasn't changed!

When we give ourselves totally to Him, this is a great treasure that He accepts.  In return, He gives Himself totally to us.  What, then, have we to fear?

March 5, 2010

I come to the Scriptures to meet with Jesus and hear from Him!  When I do this, I come away feeling enriched and strengthened.  If I don't (meaning I just approached the Bible-reading as a religious habit or obligation), I tend to feel irritated, impatient, confused or bored-- especially when reading such Old Testament books as Leviticus and Numbers!  And if I did not allow the Spirit of Truth to aid me in my studies, I would very often end up in error.  I am glad the Spirit is always available to lead us into all truth, and to reveal Christ in His Word.  I put my confidence in Him.

Even the Jews of Jesus' day had trouble understanding the Scriptures they were brought up with.  In the Mark passage, Jesus said that the Sadducees (learned men of the Book) were wrong because "you know neither the scriptures nor the power of God." Mark 2:24  On the other hand, He commended the wisdom of the scribe and said, "You are not far from the Kingdom of God." 12:34  Jesus distillation of the Commandments gives us a good template with which to begin studying the Scriptures: how does this passage help me love the Lord my God with my whole being, and what does it teach me about loving others? 12:29

When I see the Law books as a vivid and symbolic expression of God's heart, they become as revelatory to me as Revelations or the Prophets.  Did you see, in the Numbers description of the "test for faithfulness," the holy jealousy of the Lord over His Bride?  Have you ever experienced His written Word becoming a painful revelation of sin in your heart?  I have!  I am grateful that it doesn't stop there, and that Jesus took the curse Himself.

Jesus speaks prophetically over us: "you SHALL love the Lord your God with all your heart. . ." and He is bringing it to pass.  He is drawing us to Himself, and His Word washes us clean.  Although it often hurts, we are wise to keep coming back for more.

February 12, 2010

"All the people among whom you live shall see the work of the Lord; for it is an awesome thing that I will do with you." Exodus 34: 11  This is a promise I'd like to claim-- how about you? I see some stipulations here: don't make a covenant with the inhabitants of the land (the Promised Land) where God is sending you. Tear down the altars, pillars and sacred poles and don't worship their gods. What does that mean to you?

Of course God gave them other commandments, but I just wanted to focus on the fact that God called Himself "Jealous." Ex. 34:14   I avoid going into study for this devotional, but I couldn't help looking up this Hebrew word: it's "qanna," meaning "not bearing any rival; the severe avenger of departure from Himself." This is a name of God that I don't recall having learned before. We usually focus on names like Jehovah Jireh and Jehovah Rapha! He is still that, so while I'm on it, I'll drop this verse: 2 Corinthians 11:2. Look it up!

My One Year Bible is in the New Revised Standard. In the Matthew reading, it says that they handed Jesus over to be crucified out of "jealousy." I looked that up too, and the word is translated "envy" everywhere else. We get those words mixed up a lot and tend to use them interchangeably, when they are really different. I suppose the religious leaders of the day were "jealous" over their position rather than "jealousy guarding the things of God." They were also "envious" of Jesus popularity, power and whatever else.

The message for me is, don't get envious of the world and try to get what it seems they have, or I will end up compromising and making covenants with the world, which would make my God very Jealous! He wants us a "chaste bride" not "prostituting ourselves to other gods."

That is the reason, for example, that I have chosen not to pursue contracts for publication or recording, and I don't take commercial art commissions. I don't want to get entangled with the world and have it dictate to me what I should do. A desire for riches or fame are things the Lord has taken years to burn out of me, to keep me from falling away. He still runs regular "virus scans" on the motives of my heart to keep it pure.

I will not always be popular when I start to "tear down altars and break pillars and sacred poles" on the mountains where the Lord has called me to have influence. Even when I'm doing God's will, and perhaps displaying the favor of the Lord while working in the world, it is possible that some religious types will get all up in arms to try and discredit me. But I can rely on the fact that "the eye of the Lord is on those who fear him, on those who hope in his steadfast love, to deliver their soul from death, and to keep them alive in famine." Psalm 33:18-19

Whether I prosper in all that I do or I become a martyr for the testimony of Christ, one thing I know: Jesus took my death on the cross and prevailed!

January 20, 2010

Again I am struck by the agreement of the passages for today, and the message in them. Dreams and parables, signs and wonders featured strongly. This is very timely, for aren't we in the times Jesus prophesied, the end of the age? Maybe we have heard the story of Joseph and the parables of Jesus since we were children, and take them too lightly. But they have huge significance for this time that we are in.

God will be speaking to us (and even to unbelievers) in dreams and visions, because we will need instruction! The parables are important for our time! Understanding God's spiritual language is needed for direction, wisdom and discernment. For our protection and the good of those we care for and serve, we must seek the Lord for understanding! It's not just for people who might considered weird because they are gifted prophetically, it's for anyone "who has ears to hear."

"Jesus told the crowd all these things in parables; without a parable he told them nothing. This was to fulfill what had been spoken through the prophet: "I will open my mouth to speak in parables; I will proclaim what has been hidden from the foundation of the world." Matthew 13:34-35

Jesus is still speaking in dreams, visions and parables today, and He is still giving those who seek him the keys of understanding that will save the day.
